N-glycans attach to Aspargine residues of nascent proteins at sites conforming to the pattern Asn-X-(Ser/Thr). Synthesis of the core precursor begins in the cytoplasm, the core oligosaccharide structure is flipped into the lumen of the ER and further glycosylated. The core structure is transferred in the Rough ER to a nascent protein by an OST (oligosaccharyltransferase) and further processed. Diversification then occurs in the Golgi resulting in various antennary structures.
