Conformational change of Gal-T1

Conformation II of Gal-T1. With flexible region highlighted blue. The sugar binding site is exposed.

B. Ramakrishnan and Pradman K. Qasba: J.Mol. Biol. 2001, v310, p.205-218
The primary metal binding site of Gal-T1; also binding is UDP-Gal.   Positiions of the flexible region in Conformation I (red) and Conformation II (blue). W314 swings into the newly exposed pocket to lock the nucleotide sugar into the binding site. This conformational change also creates the sugar binding site. Shown is GlcNAc in the sugar binding pocket.   A linear interpolation of the movement of the flexible region.
