Catalytic Action of Gal-T1
Reaction Catalysation. In the presence of a-Lactalbumin, metal ions, sugar substrate, and Glucose, Gal-T1 transfers Galactose to Glucose, synthesizing Lactose. In the absence of a-Lactalbumin, Gal-T1 transfers Galactose to GlcNac, synthesizing Gal-(b1-4)-GlcNAc (N-acetyl Lactoseamine). The acceptor sugar, GlcNAc or Glucose, binds in the acceptor binding pocket of Gal-T1.
